Green Lantern (1960) 128
May 1980
Prologue
By Denny O’Neil, Joe Staton
The Green that Got Away!
By Len Wein, Dave Cockrum, Bob Smith
Hal tells Carol Ferris, Thomas Kalmaku, and Fabian (in Prologue) about how it is that his ring talks to him some times. The story he tells them is The Green That Got Away!
Hal’s ring loses power just as he is trying to apprehend some criminals. He improvises and manages to stop them without the ring. He later learns that someone else is controlling the ring. The ring won’t tell him who is controlling it but he does get it to lead him to the culprit, Hector Hammond. A battle ensues which Green Lantern eventually wins.
The last page of the story makes it clear that Fabian is indeed just a disguise for General Fabrikant.
Thoughts
There isn’t a whole lot to this story but there is something about it that I like. It may just be that I’m starting to see some of the pieces coming together. Fabian no longer seems like a weird addition to the comic book. He is General Fabrikant although maybe that is also an alias for someone more familiar.
I’m more impressed with the visual storytelling in this story. It might be that this story is just that much more impressive or maybe it is just that I’m finally starting to get a feel for this series.
I love the cover but even a great cover can’t make up for a substandard story.
I like the story within a story.
I’m missing three of the next five issues of Green Lantern so I probably won’t be reading any more GL for a while.
Letters by Lantern Light
Includes letters from two fans (Tamsyn O’Flynn, Alicia Wu) who also wrote letters that were published in Green Lantern 125 and 127, respectively.
Answer Man
Fact File column highlights Insect Queen and Metamorpho. I have no idea how many times this column was included on the DC Features Page.
