New Teen Titans (1980) 37

New Teen Titans (1980) 37
Dec 1983

Light’s Out, Everyone!
By Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Romeo Tanghal, Mike W. Barr

The Titans team up with the Outsiders (after a brief misunderstanding) to fight the Fearsome Five and rescue Dr. Jace. Terra and Geo-Force are both alerted to the fact that Dr. Jace is in trouble by a pinging noise that emanates from their wrist bands. The two teams converge on Dr. Jace’s lab where they discover that she has been abducted. They conclude that The Fearsome Five must have abducted her based on evidence they find in the lab.

Robin and Batman aren’t present when the teams first meet but join them soon thereafter at Titans Tower. There is a noticeable amount of tension in Dick’s and Bruce’s relationship in their first shared scene, at stately Wayne Manor. Alfred Pennyworth and Jason Todd are also present. Dick drops a hint about dropping the identity of Robin which prompts Jason to ask if he can take up that identity.

The two teams receive a call from Captain Hall of the NYPD who tells them about a break-in at Bio-Tron Limited. They head to the lab and discover five unconscious homeless men whose bodies are in the process of being transformed into mud monsters. They conclude that it looks like something Dr. Jace could have done but that she only would have done it after being coerced into doing so. Raven picks up some empathic emanations from what is left of the men.

The information that Raven gleams leads them to Ale! The Gang’s All Here, a bar in Manhattan. The owner tells them about what happened. The Fearsome Five was there recruiting more unemployed men for their scheme. Robin and Batman find some trace elements of an explosive which they conclude must have been assembled by Psimon, who was a physicist before he became a super villain.

The two teams head to Psimon’s lab, on an island in Gotham Bay. The three teams fight. The fight ends when Psimon blows up the island. The villains escape.

Notes

Dr. Jace first appeared in Batman and the Outsiders 1 (Sep 1983). She helped both Terra and Geo-Force acquire their super-powers.

This is the Fearsome Five’s second appearance and second time battling the New Teen Titans.

Thoughts

I’ve read this story numerous times before and talked about it on Dave Talks Comics 82. I think I liked it a lot more when it was first published.
