Black Hammer 13

Black Hammer 13
Aug 2017

by Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, Dave Stewart

What happened on that fateful day 10 years ago? What preceded Lucy’s arrival in Rockwood? What is Rockwood? That last question isn’t fully explained but the other two are in the final chapter of the first series of Black Hammer.

Abe gets interrogated by Rockwood policemen. They suspect him of having killed Sheriff Trueheart. He tries to explain but they don’t buy his explanation. Madame Dragonfly shows up and uses her powers to make them let him go. Abe doesn’t fully appreciate what she did. It doesn’t seem right to him.

Lucy tried talking to Gail but all she has for Lucy are sarcastic responses. Lucy tried visiting Madame Dragonfly in her cabin. No one answers when she knocks but what Lucy sees inside, through a window, spooks her enough to give up on finding Madame Dragonfly.

The members of the team were assembled, 10 years ago, before they faced off against a foe whom they didn’t know existed. Starlok, Black Hammer’s mentor brought them together. They were tired of being heroes but all the other ones had already been killed by evil god. They were all that stood between Evil God and the destruction of the Earth.

Lucy continues her walk. It leads her to her father’s hammer. She can hear him calling her. She reaches out, grabs the hammer and is transformed into the new incarnation of Black Hammer.

Thoughts

What a read. So many wordless panels. So good.

It ends on a cliffhanger, as described above. Every moment. Every panel. So good. I’m not sure why but I love it. I think it’s good, better than good. It feels raw and un-meticulous.
