The Pegasus Project
Part Four: The Deadlier of the Species
Story by Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio
Art by George Perez and Gene Day
Thundra breaks into Project Pegasus HQ with the wrestlers she faced in recent issues: Titania, Screaming Mimi, Poundcakes, and Letha. Their costumes have been upgraded with energy elements that augment their natural abilities. Thundra is there to complete a mission given to her by a mysterious cigar smoking man. They are to break in and plant a bomb in the complex. She agreed to the mission because the reward will be great and because she believes Project Pegasus to be an instrument of an evil organization.
Their orders are to plant the bomb near the atomic waste disposal unit and then leave quickly and quietly. Thundra is surprised when the others take off to wreck havoc in the underground facility. She goes looking for them and runs into the Thing.
Ben asks her what she’s doing in the Top Secret facility. She refuses to give him a straight answer. He blocks her way. They get into a fight.
Quasar and Giant Man are working together when they hear an alarm go off. They split up to investigate the source of the disturbance. Quasar runs into Letha and Screaming Mimi. Giant Man runs into Poundcakes and Titania. The wrestlers give both heroes a run for their money but in the end the wrestlers are defeated and everyone comes together at the end of the issue, everyone except Dr. Tom Lightener. He works to assemble the pieces brought in by the wrestlers. Once assembled they will be part of the Nth Projector which he will use to destroy Project Pegasus.
Thoughts
This is the only issue of this story that I own. I’m reading all of them on the Marvel Unlimited app. The digital re-coloring on comic books from the pre-digital coloring era can be pretty bad. I think this is a good example of that. The colors are bright and vivid but lack the depth of those found in the original issue.
Who is the man in the shadows? He’s smoking a cigar but I don’t think that it is Nick Fury. Why would he have Thundra and the others attack the Project Pegasus HQ? That makes no sense at all.
Thundra first appeared in Fantastic Four 129. Most of her 16 appearances since then and prior to this issue were in other issues of Fantastic Four. The only exception was Avengers Annual 8.
