Ikigami: The Ultimate Limit Vol 9
By Motoro Mase
Episode 17: National Welfare Immunization
Act 1
Hitomi Oba is a nurse who was recently transferred from the NICU to outpatient because she had a tendency to get very emotional. The incident that precipitated her transfer was a case where the parents of an new born infant decided to let their child die rather than have an operation performed. The parents were concerned that the child would have disabilities if it survived.
Fujimoto and Mr. Ishii discuss the possibility of war between Japan and the Federation. They also discuss the Thought Examination Board which is due to end its investigation in the near future. Fujimoto wonders if that means that he is in the clear.
Dr. Nishikawa, Nurse Oba’s supervisor in the outpatient ward, is a very serious man. It is said that he used to be much more lighthearted. He changed after he learned that one of the patients to whom he administered an immunization shot died for National Welfare.
Hitomi lives with her father. He is widowed. Hitomi’s mother died years before. Hitomi is in the bath so her father answers the door when Fujimoto arrives to deliver her Ikigami.
Thoughts
Did Hitomi’s mother die for National Welfare? Nothing has been stated explicitly but I get the impression that might be the case. How will Hitomi’s father react even if that isn’t the case?
Is Fujimoto in the clear or does he have anything else to worry about?
What is the Federation? Is that supposed to be China, South Korea, North Korea, or Russia? Those seem to be the most likely candidates.
