Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong
07/09/21 - Pages 86-87 - Battle Breakdown
The data in this chart comes from the 1990 Marvel Universe Trading Cards Series. The chart rates 56 characters in terms of what percentage of battles they have won.
There are just 4 characters who have a rating of 80% or higher (Punisher, Silver Surfer, Nick Fury, Invisible Woman). Punisher has the highest rating but he is also the character with the fewest number of battles, not just of the top 4 but of the entire chart. Silver Surfer is ranked second but has somewhere on the order of 70 times as many battles as the Punisher.
The bottom of the chart is dominated by villains. The heroes with the lowest rankings are Daredevil and Havok. The villains with the highest ratings are Galactus and Bullseye.
07/10/21 - Pages 88-89 - Bird Watching: The Five Faces of Robin
This chart breaks down the publishing history of five characters who have been Batman’s sidekick. I like how this chart is laid out but there is a lot of blank space on one of these two pages.
07/12/21 - Pages 90-91 - The Chris Ware Sadness Scale
I’ve never read any of Chris Ware’s books but I have heard of them and even saw him speak at a panel at SPX a few years ago.
07/13/21 - Pages 92-93 - Meta Human: Pop Culture in Scott Pilgrim
This chart shows the degree to which 5 different categories of pop culture are referenced in the Scott Pilgrim comic book. The five categories are comic books, music, TV, video games, movies. Music and video games take up the biggest shares of the chart.
07/14/21 - Page 94 - Venom’s Family Web
This chart shows the flow of the Symbiote known as Venom as after it detached itself from Peter Parker. It attached itself to others, had offspring, and transformed. I only have passing knowledge of Venom and haven’t read any of the comics in which it appears. I do like the design and layout of this chart.
07/15/21 - Page 95 - Dressed to Kill: Explaining Cosplay and Crossplay
This page has two Venn diagrams. The first one shows that Cosplay is the intersection of Costume and Play. The second one shows that Crossplay is the intersection of Crossdressing and Cosplay.
07/16/21 - Pages 96-97 - Guide to Comic-Con: History - Nerd Prom: Comic-Con Attendance
This is the first of several charts that focus on Comic-Con. I like the chart, way the information is visually displayed but there is a lot of empty space on the first of these pages.
07/17/21 - Page 98 - Guide to Comic-Con: Cosplay - The Hulk
This chart seems to show a breakdown between bare (green) skin and padded uniform. One part is colored green and the other is purple. The chart takes up most of the page but I’m really not that impressed with it. I’m not sure I understand exactly what it means.
07/18/21 - Page 99 - Guide to Comic-Con: Cosplay - X-Men Characters I Remembered Thanks to Cosplay
This chart, if you can call it that, is in the shape of the X-Men logo. The “chart” is divided by the X into four regions. A different character is assigned to each region: Psylocke, Hepzibah, Changeling, Vulcan. One of these characters sounds like a member of the New Teen Titans to me, I recognize two of the others names but fourth one sounds like a relative of Mr. Spock.
07/19/21 - Page 100 - Guide to Comic-Con: Cosplay - Spider-Man
This chart has two axes and is divided into four quadrants. The horizontal axis goes from Easy to Difficult. The vertical axis ranges from Low Quality to high Quality. The names of Spider-Man and some of his supporting cast (Venom, Carnage, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, Aunt May) are plotted on the chart. It isn’t clear to me what criteria are used to determine where the six characters are placed on the chart.
