Super Graphic (Charts 81-90)

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

08/09/21 - Pages 134-135 - Amazonian Prime: 70 Years of Wonder Woman’s Legs

This chart fills the two pages allotted and it is a colorful fashion. I don’t mind seeing a woman’s legs, especially if they are drawn shapely, as they usually are in comic books. I also feel as if outfits that show off lots of leg are frequently impractical. I also am a fan of the Black Canary in a jump suit.

08/10/21 - Page 136 - Recurring Character: Chris Evans

Chris Evans had appeared in 7 movies based on comic books at the time this book was published, more than anyone else. I’m not sure if he is still the record holder in 2021. This chart could easily have been stretched to two pages but it fits quite well on a single page.

08/11/21 - Page 137 - How to Spot a Vigilante

This chart has the names of ten vigilantes listed alphabetically, starting with Batman, on the horizontal axis. There eleven characteristics on the vertical axis. Batman has 10 of the 11 characteristics. The only one he is missing is “named Vigilante“. The one who scores the highest after Batman is Moon Knight. He has 8 of the 11 characteristics.

This chart commits the sin of using a very light color on a very light background for one of the characteristics. When I first looked at the chart I thought wondered why they would include a characteristic if no one had it.

Super Graphic (Charts 71-80)

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

07/30/21 - Page 115 - Birds of a Feather: Scrooge McDuck’s Family Tree

There’s a lot of names here that I don’t recognize. The most interesting part of this family tree is seeing how Scrooge is related to Donald and how he is related to Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

07/31/21 - Pages 116-117 - Bat Channels: Every TV Show Starring Batman

There are 18 shows in this chart, 8 of them have Batman’s name in the title. Most of the others are an iteration of Super Friends or Justice League. The one exception which clearly does not belong in this chart is Young Justice. I would also argue that shows like Super Friends and Justice League, team shows, should be classified differently from shows that have Batman’s name in the title.

08/01/21 - Pages 118-119 - Character Kingdom

This chart organizes a couple hundred characters into 6 major groups (amphibians, birds, anthropods, fish, mammals, reptiles) and 21 minor groups based on the animals in their names. In some cases the names are just names and in other cases the characters have superpowers that are similar to those of animals.

08/02/21 - Pages 120-121 - The Punisher’s Kill Count

This “chart” compares the Punisher’s kill count in the three movies to that in comic books (1974-2011). The total for the three movies is less than one-half of one percent of the total from comic books.

I did a quick google search and think I found the source for the total kills from comic books. The exact same number was mentioned by Stephen Wacker in a press conference in 2011. It isn’t clear where he got that number from. I found another source that pegs the number much lower. That source (listofdeaths.fandom.com) actually lists all the comic books in which he had kills but includes comic books up to 2021.

08/03/21 - Pages 122-123 - Fighting Forces: Oppression and Rebellion in Persepolis

This chart details all the major points in Persepolis along the horizontal axis of time and the vertical axis of high/low. This is just one big spoiler filled chart. It could be useful to someone who wants to analyze the two books of Persepolis further but by itself it seems a little underwhelming.

08/04/21 - Pages 124-125 - Mutant Manhattan: A Guide to New York Locations in the Marvel Universe

The title is inaccurate in that it isn’t mutant themed. I think the word Mutant is in there just for the alliterative effect. The title is accurate is accurate and the subtitle is inaccurate in that this is just a guide to locations in Manhattan. The other 4 boroughs are not included in this chart.

I am not a fan of putting light colored text on a light colored background. This chart has white text on a light blue background which is very hard to read.

There are 13 locations in this chart or map. I was was familiar with most but not all of them. I doubt that I could have told you approximately where they were on a map of Manhattan.

08/05/21 - Pages 126-127 - To the Grave and Back: How Long Characters Stayed Dead

There are 46 characters in this chart. I think this is a valid subject for a chart but there’s something about this one that doesn’t work for me. 36 of these deaths occurred in the 90s or later, well after my sweet spot for reading comics.

08/06/21 - Pages 128-129 - Choose Your Own Adventure: The Mad Magazine Mystery Record

I was completely unaware of this. I was never a big reader of Mad but I have an issue or two. This is an interesting way to present this information.

08/07/21 - Pages 130-131 - Fast Company: The Four Faces of the Flash

This chart presents a high level chronology of the careers of the 4 Flashes (Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, Bart Allen). I like the presentation and the information in this chart. There is a lot of empty, unused space on the the first of these two pages.

08/08/21 - Pages 132-133 - A Watchmen Primer

These charts fill the pages to the point that one of them is turned sideways so that it can fit. The charts explain quite a bit about the story but there is no way that the charts can convey the way in which it is drawn or told visually.

Super Graphic (Charts 61-70)

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

07/20/21 - Page 101 - Guide to Comic-Con: Cosplay - Pac-Man

This is a pie chart and just plain silly. There is no explanation of what it is supposed to be. My best guess is that it illustrates the frequency with which people cosplay as Pac-Man and the ghosts.

07/21/21 - Page 102 - Guide to Comic-Con: Cosplay - Wolverine

This chart looks like part of a hand with three claws sticking up. Each claw represents a different defining feature of Wolverine’s appearance. I’m lukewarm on this chart, partly because I don’t see where this information came from and partly because it seems like there are probably other defining features that could have been included.

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe

07/09/21 - Pages 86-87 - Battle Breakdown

The data in this chart comes from the 1990 Marvel Universe Trading Cards Series. The chart rates 56 characters in terms of what percentage of battles they have won.

There are just 4 characters who have a rating of 80% or higher (Punisher, Silver Surfer, Nick Fury, Invisible Woman). Punisher has the highest rating but he is also the character with the fewest number of battles, not just of the top 4 but of the entire chart. Silver Surfer is ranked second but has somewhere on the order of 70 times as many battles as the Punisher.

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

06/27/21 - Pages 72-73 - Who Reads DC Comics?

Nine charts about the breakdown of readers of DC Comics. The data comes from a poll done by DC Comics in 2011. This is good but not great. I like the different ways the data is presented and that the charts use all the available space.

06/28/21 - Pages 74-75 - Playing for the Other Team: The Many Affiliations of the Marvel Universe

Super Graphic (Charts 31-40)

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

06/15/21 - Pages 56-57 - Cerebus: Judging a Comic By It’s Covers

This chart shows the dominant colors on the covers of all 300 issues of Cerebus. I think it might be a bit more useful if this chart distilled the information down to trends or the dominant colors. Each cover is so small that I find this chart to be a bit incomprehensible.

06/05/21 - Page 40 - Richie Rich vs. Royal Roy

A side by side comparison of Harvey Comics’ character and Marvel Comics’ knockoff which was considerably less successful. This chart isn’t as visually appealing as most of the others but it gets the job done.

05/26/21 - Pages 22-23 - Map Quest

This is a map of the world with the locations of 45 notable places spread across all 7 continents

05/27/21 - Pages 24-25 - Welcome to the Multiverse: Wait, There’s More Than One Earth?

This chart only mentions the DC multiverse. There is no mention of the alternate earths of Marvel Comics

Super Graphic (Charts 1-10)

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

05/15/21 - pages 2-3 - What’s in this book? What the charts are about and reasons for the charts.

05/17/21 - Pages 4-5 - Full Disclosure: My bookshelf

There is one big chart and several smaller ones; I have to wonder how much statistical work went into producing these charts; the content of some of the charts seems very subjective and probably changes quite frequently
