Super Graphic (Charts 31-40)

Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong

06/15/21 - Pages 56-57 - Cerebus: Judging a Comic By It’s Covers

This chart shows the dominant colors on the covers of all 300 issues of Cerebus. I think it might be a bit more useful if this chart distilled the information down to trends or the dominant colors. Each cover is so small that I find this chart to be a bit incomprehensible.

06/16/21 - Pages 58-59 - Archer Appeal

These charts compare the bows and arrows of Green Arrow and Hawkeye. I think these are some of the better charts. I like both the sort of information being provided and the manner in which it is displayed.

06/17/21 - Page 60 - The Flash: Ranking the Scarlet Speedsters by likability

This chart seems silly at best. Who determined these rankings? Was there a poll? When was it conducted? Even if there was a poll (and I have my doubts) this is not the sort of data that interests me.

06/18/21 - Page 61 - Superman’s Movies: Ranking the Man of Steel’s films by enjoyment

Another silly chart. This is a pixelated image of Superman that is composed of 5 colors, each of which represents one of five movies (Superman, Superman II, Superman III, Superman IV, Superman Returns). Naturally, the red and blue are used to represent the first two movies.

06/19/21 - Pages 62-63 - Who Is the Fastest Man Alive?

Flash and Superman raced 5 times. The first two races took place in 1967. Barry Allen was the Flash in the first four races. Wally West was the Flash in the fifth race which took place in 1990. The first two races were ties and were reprinted in the Limited Collectors Edition C-22. The Flash won the other three races.

This chart is boring but I’m interested in the details and the sort of information it is attempting to present.

06/20/21 - Page 64 - Small Wonder: How Big Is the Miniature City of Kandor?

The city’s population according to this chart is probably somewhere between 2-3 million.  It is hard to say for sure considering how the chart is laid out. According to my online research that number is too high or too low by a few to several million, depending on which comic book you look at.

06/22/21 - Page 65 - Put a Ring on It: A History of Concentric Circles

A chronological look at some characters whose look or powers are manifested with concentric circles. There are some problems with this page, namely that some of the lines are barely visible because of the combination of colors. I like the chart but it falls a bit short of the mark.

06/24/21 - Pages 66-67 - Who’s Who in Sin City

This chart is fascinating but I’ve only seen the first Sin City movie and never read the books. Some of the lines connecting people get a bit hard to follow from one page to the other.

06/25/21 - Pages 68-69 - Secret Identities: Stan Lee’s Nicknames for the Marvel Bullpen

This is a Venn Diagram with 81 names that all fall into one or more of 8 different circles. All but 18 of the names are within the Alliterative circle. The source of the information seems to be the Stan’s Soapbox columns. I like this chart both for the way the information is presented as well as the type of information. There  are some nicknames that I didn’t find that I was expecting to see but maybe that’s because they weren’t used in the Stan’s Soapbox column.

06/26/21 - Pages 70-71 - The Periodic Table of The Metal Men

Interesting stuff but it seems like there is a lot of unused space on the second of these pages.
