Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to the Comic Book Universe
by Tim Leong
06/05/21 - Page 40 - Richie Rich vs. Royal Roy
A side by side comparison of Harvey Comics’ character and Marvel Comics’ knockoff which was considerably less successful. This chart isn’t as visually appealing as most of the others but it gets the job done.
There are two axes on this chart. The first is the Big/Small axis and the the second is the Tight/Jiggly axis. I’m not sure how to evaluate this chart because while I’ve seen some shots of Crumb’s art that’s the extent of my familiarity with his work.
06/07/21 - Pages 42-43 - Second City: The Real Metropolis
These pages contain a few charts that compare the fictional city of Metropolis to the town of Metropolis, IL, home of the Superman Museum.
06/08/21 - Pages 44-45 - Nuff Said: Stan Lee Has Issues
This is a circular chart which depicts how many issues of 25 different series Stan Lee wrote. Most of his longest runs were on series that did not feature superheroes or that started as something other that superhero series: Rawhide Kid, Kid Colt Outlaw, Millie the Model, Two Gun Kid, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense.
06/09/21 - Pages 46-47 - A Fantastic Four Primer
Several charts try to explain who they are, mostly in relation to one another.
06/10/21 - Pages 48-49 - Super-Rollercoasters
This comic book adjacent chart measures the height, distance, and length of 15 rollercoasters based on DC Comics characters. Most of them are based on Batman, Superman, or a supervillain who is one of their regular antagonists.
06/11/21 - Page 50 - The Politics of Good vs. Evil
This graph shows where 26 comic book characters are at on two axes: Liberal/Conservative and Libertarian/Authoritarian. The most extreme characters are both villains (Joker, Darkseid) but they are at opposite ends of the graph.
06/12/21 - Page 51 - Pissed Off: A Calvin and Hobbes Trajectory
Is there any scientific basis for this graph which is only tenuously related to the comic strip named in the subtitle? I doubt it.
06/13/21 - Pages 52-53 - Fast-Ball Special
There are two charts on these pages. The first is about the game that the Marvel Comics Editorial team played against Warren Warriors on Aug 3, 1982. The Marvel team is referred to as a baseball team in one place and a softball team in another place, on the same page. I’m guessing that the data on this page came from a Bullpen Bulletins column.
The second chart is about Charlie Brown’s baseball team. This chart seems appropriate for this sort of book the other seems tangentially related at best.
06/14/21 - Pages 54-55 - Wardrobe Upgrade: Changes in Costume Color
This chart shows how the primary color of 12 characters, mostly heroes, have changed over the years.
