Soulquest
by Chris Claremont, Ron Frenz, Tom Palmer, Tom Orzechowski, Glynis Wein, Louise Jones
Two years have passed. Illyana has spent that time learning how to use magic under the tutelage of Belasco. Cat still serves him. She is more wild beast than human these days, ever since Belasco transformed her.
Ororo visits Illyana late one night while she is practicing magic by herself. Illyana has a plan for how she can defeat Belasco and free herself. She knows that Belasco has corrupted her soul. She knows that it will only get worse the longer she stays with him. Ororo warns Illyana about using Belasco’s magic against him.
Illyana escapes from Belasco’s castle for a time by summoning and passing through stepping discs. She encounters the New Mutants briefly. She does not recognize them. She travels backwards through time and sees Ororo seem to defeat Belasco only to learn that he is immortal in this realm.
Illyana returns to the present where Ororo is also fighting Belasco. Cat is helping him. Illyana is forced to kill Cat in order to prevent her from killing Ororo. She is not dead yet but Belasco promises to damn Ororo’s soul forever by feeding it to the dark ones he serves.
Thoughts
This story is way too wordy. Chris Claremont clearly does not want the story told visually. He only trusts his words.
The cover is a bit misleading. That scene does not happen in this issue but maybe it will in the next one.
This series is proving to be a bit of a slog. It isn’t as much fun as I hoped it would be to read. There’s potential here but the story feels very rushed. I don’t expect the next and final chapter to redeem it in my eyes but maybe it will.
