…and through him save a world…
by Denny O’Neill, Neal Adams, John Costanza
Green Lantern and Green Arrow take Carol Ferris to visit Ferris Aircraft’s facility in the city of Abraham. There they meet Isaac, a young man who has been causing trouble for Ferris Aircraft because it has been polluting the environment.
Green Arrow has a nasty encounter with the guards at Ferris Aircraft. Green Lantern tries to arrest Isaac but Green Arrow objects and the two get into a fight. The guards at Ferris Aircraft breakup the fight and arrest GL, GA, and Isaac.
The heroes eventually break free but not soon enough for Isaac. He is dead by the time they get to him. Hal angrily destroys the latest and greatest experimental aircraft that Ferris Aircraft was working on.
The previous issue of Green Lantern was a reprint issue and did not contain any original material aside from the cover.
I can appreciate the issue they are dealing with here, big business polluting the environment. It is still with us today, more then 50 years later, more or less unchanged, but there are some holes in this story. How did Isaac get hung on the airplane? How did that kill him? Why did Green Lantern punch Green Arrow on page 22? What is it with Green Lantern and Green Arrow getting knocked out of the fight by ordinary men? It isn’t the first time it has happened (see issue 85), but what gives? The story makes up for the plot holes with heavy handed preaching. I would have preferred a subtler story with fewer plot holes. Abraham and Isaac? Are Green Lantern and Green Arrow supposed to be Jacob and Esau?
This is not the last GL/GA story for O’Neill and Adams but the Green Lantern comic book series was canceled after this issue. It wasn’t revived until a few years later. Denny O’Neill also wrote the revival but Neal Adams did not return as penciler and co-writer.
