Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld Preview
Duel in Dark Magic
by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, Ernie Colón, Tom Ziuko, Karen Berger, Dave Manak
Dark Opal commissions his blacksmith to make him a breastplate that will incorporate all twelve of the gemstones. He is only missing one, the amethyst. Dark Opal gives the other gemstones to Karnelian, his son, trusting him to keep an eye over the valuables.
Princess Amethyst, traveling with Granch, an ogre like being, arrives in the Bog of One Thousand Despairs. Citrina, her mother, has sent her there on a mission. Dark Opal finds out about Amethyst’s journey and sees an opportunity to complete his collection of gemstones.
Dark Opal attempts to interfere with Amethyst’s quest but she turns out to be a stronger wielder of magic than he imagined. Dark Opal’s plans are also foiled by Karnelian, who has plans of his own and surreptitiously interferes with the blacksmith’s work.
Amethyst is able to get what she sought. Dark Opal sends three witches after her but they are unable to capture her before she drops through a portal and returns to her life as Amy, a thirteen year old girl.
Thoughts
I have not read the Legion of Super-Heroes story in this issue but it is part of a run of comic books that I hopefully will get around to reading some day.
I'm not crazy about the cover to this preview issue. I prefer the full page ad for this series which ran around this time in many DC comic books.
I thought I had read this preview issue before but I don’t recall any of it. I did not own this issue when I was younger. According to my records I bought this issue at Baltimore Comic Con in 2015. It wasn’t until 2020 that I bought the 12-issue maxi-series that follows this story. I may have read the preview issue when I first bought it and then just forgot about it because I didn’t own the rest of the story at that time.
There is a lot going on in this 15-page preview chapter. I read and re-read it a few times while I was summarizing it. I might not have mentioned everything in the issue but I think I captured the essence of the important parts.
