The Flash 219 (2)

The Flash 219
Jan 1973

The Fate of an Archer
by Denny O’Neil, Neil Adams

Black Canary gets hit by a truck while on the phone with Green Lantern. She had figured out the whereabouts of Oliver Queen. She was in a phone booth, relaying that information to Green Lantern, when she was hit.

Black Canary needs a blood transfusion and Ollie is the only person he knows that has a compatible blood type. Green Lantern uses the information Black Canary gave him and locates Ollie. He finds the Emerald Archer in a monastery in the mountains of California.

Hal and Ollie are ready to return to Star City when a disgruntled man attacks them. Hal interrupted him, earlier in this installment, when he was digging through the wreckage of the Arrow Plane. Hal gets knocked out and it is up to Ollie to stop the man from killing them.

Thoughts

This is yet another story (in this run of stories) where superheroes are almost killed by ordinary human men. What was up with that? Were there any supervillains or extra powerful villains in this run of stories? Maybe a couple but the dominant antagonists seem to be ordinary humans.

My original impression was that this three part story was originally supposed to run in Green Lantern 90. There’s a big leap from the last page of part two to the first page of part three which makes me think that either I’m wrong or the story was changed once they became aware it was going to be spread across three issues of The Flash.

This is the last story in the Hard Traveling Heroes collection. I was not, on the whole, terribly impressed with this run of comic books. It did not live up to the hype. The visuals are wonderful but I found the plots and pace of the storytelling to be lacking.
