Alpha Flight 17

Alpha Flight 17
Dec 1984

Dreams Die Hard...
By John Byrne, Terry Austin

This story fills in some of the story leading up to and then recounts the story from Uncanny X-Men 109, the first appearance of Guardian (aka Vindicator). He was sent to retrieve Wolverine who by then was a member of the X-Men.

Heather sits in a hospital bed and talks to Wolverine and Puck about her husband, who was killed in issue 12. There is lots of exposition in this issue.

I've read X-Men 109 before. It (and this comic book) can be found on Marvel Unlimited. I just don't feel like taking the time to compare the two.

The last 3 pages introduce something new which has nothing to do with the first appearance of Guardian but will probably have some impact on a future story. Walter Langowski (Sasquatch) and Aurora are in a laboratory. He is experimenting on her, with her consent. She writhes in pain as he attempt to rearrange her molecules. She seems happy once the procedure is complete.

This issue felt a bit like filler. Spending 80-90% of this issue issue recapping and retelling a story from a few years before feels indulgent. Not even close to being my favorite issue of this series. If I wasn't already wanting to finish off Byrne's run on the book I might stop with this issue.

Bullpen Bulletins

Brief tribute to Sol Brodsky (1923-1984), Production Manager; Vice President, Operations; Vice President, Special Projects

Lots of limited series, most of which I don’t own and haven’t read

Superhero
- Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars - Yes, but just the first four issues
- West Coast Avengers - No
- Machine Man - Yes, and I read it six years ago according to this page and there's a brief mention of me buying it on this page.
- Iceman - No. I have one issue but I've never read it
- Beauty and the Beast - No
- Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner - No
- Kitty Pryde and Wolverine - No
