Pang the Wandering Monk
Volume 2: Winter Worm, Summer Grass
by Ben Costa
Pages 33-60
Pang meets Liú Yīng Jié who doesn’t believe he is a Shaolin monk. The Liú Yīng makes fun of Four Herbs Mountain when Pang mentions it. They wind up fighting. The Liú Yīng uses a drunken style. It throws Pang off but he manages to hold his own until Liú Yīng stabs him in the shoulder with a sword. He follows that up by falling on Pang and passing out.
There’s a brief interlude with General Ombo. The connection of this scene to Pang’s situation or the events in the last book aren’t clear.
Pang has a dream that master Bó and Jiān try talking him, self into giving himself up to a tiger. He wakes up to Liú Yīng who now seems to bear him no ill will and a Shì Tóng Rú, a Shaolin monk.
The artwork is sometimes a bit muddy and tough to read but I am enjoying the story. I wonder if the look of the colors has something to with the translation of this book from a web comic to a printed book. Colors on the screen don’t always reproduce the same in a printed edition. This wasn’t necessarily a great place to hit the pause button but I was ready for a break.
