Pang the Wandering Monk
Volume 2: Winter Worm, Summer Grass
by Ben Costa
Pages 1-32
Pang is looking for a temple but he’s lost. It starts to rain. He takes shelter in a cave and thinks of Yang Yang. He sees a pig. He tries chasing it but he loses it in a sea of bamboo. He realizes he’s lost after flailing around in the bamboo forest in the rain for a while.
Pang hears a rustling noise. He thinks it is the pig but when the bamboo parts he sees that it is a starving tigress with two cubs. He considers following the example of Buddha and offering himself to the tigers but he’s too scared to do anything but fight for his life.
He evades the tigers but he slips and slides down a muddy hill. He curses himself for not sacrificing himself for the tigers’ sake but then he sees a pig and starts following it. It leads him to a temple.
It’s been too long since I read volume 1 of this short series. I bought that one from the author at SPX in 2010. The publication date on this collection is 2013. It must have sitting on my bookshelf for quite some time. I bought it through a Kickstarter campaign.
So far I’m enjoying the story. The fight with the tigress and the slide down the hill are very frenetic looking pages. It is often hard to tell in those scenes exactly what’s happening, other than the obvious.
