Ikigami: The Ultimate Limit Vol 1
By Motoro Mase

Episode 2: The Last Song

Act 1

There are two potential victims in this story. They are street performers, a musical act. Hidekazu Morio writes the songs and plays the guitar. Torio Tababe sings. They perform under the name Komatsuna for about a year before breaking up. Hidekazu thinks they need to continue to practice and refine their act. Torio thinks they are ready for the big time. They get approached by a representative of a record company one night. He expresses an interest in their music but he is only interested in signing Torio to a contract. Torio is tired of Hidekazu’s insistence that they need more practice and quits the group.

Months pass. Torio doesn’t find the fame and success he expected. Hidekazu has a day job. He’s a delivery truck driver. He spends his time thinking about how Komatsuna broke up, the things they both said. I thought Hidekazu was going to be the one to receive the Ikigami but I was wrong. The chapter ends with the reveal that Torio is the one destined to receive the Ikigami but before he actually gets it.

Fujimoto spends his time between delivering death notices in training. He attends a lecture in which he is told about how victims identities are kept secret until just before they are due to die. There are three departments that are involved in the process of delivering the deadly doses. The first department in responsible for placing the deadly capsule into vials are also loaded with vaccines. The vials are then passed on to the second department which is responsible for loading the vials in syringes. The syringes are then passed along to the third department which administers the delivery of the vaccines to young kids. Fujimoto has his doubts about the process but he doesn’t discuss them with anyone for fear of being punished. Those who question the National Welfare Act are summarily executed by lethal injection.
